Report has it that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will hold a National Executive Council meeting this week to determine the direction of the ongoing national strike action.
All branch chairmen are expected to be in Abuja today for the meeting which is expected to end on Saturday.
The branches of the union yesterday held a meeting to vote whether the strike should continue or not. It is based on these votes the Executives of the union will decide on Whether or not to continue with the strike action.
The President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi when contacted to comment on the development said he will only speak after the executive meeting.
However, one of the Branch Chairmen of the union from a university in the southern part of Nigeria who spoke to newsmen said, “From the Southern part of the country and some parts of the North, universities voted for continuation of the strike; but we cannot tell now until after the meeting of NEC.”
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said it did not fix the tertiary institutions minimum admission cut-off marks, contrary to reports. JAMB had announced that minimum cut-off marks for the university degree for the 2017 academic year be put at 120, Polytechnics and Monotechnics at 100.
The body said the decision was a collective decision of stakeholders in the education sector.
JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede while speaking on Wednesday said the cut-off marks was a unanimous agreement between stakeholders.
Oloyede said the decision will not reduce the quality of education as feared by Nigerians. He added that individual institutions could raise their admission benchmark higher but not above 180 and below 120 for universities.
“With this decision, universities are not to go below the minimum 120 cut-off points adopted by the meeting for admissions,” he said.
“What JAMB did was a recommendation,we only determined the minimum, whatever the various institutions determine as their admission cut-off mark is their decisions. The Senate and academic boards of universities should be allowed to determine their cut-off marks.“

A man who was caught with human flesh has made a shocking confession that has left many people completely flustered.
According to Daily Sun SA, a man who was found in possession of human parts allegedly told Escourt cops he was “tired of eating human flesh”.

A source said there were suspicions that the three may have violated graves as well. “They face r*pe, murder and charges relating to possession of human tissue,” said Mbhele. Ward councillor Mthembeni Majola said he could not believe his eyes when one of the suspects led community members and police to where the body of a women was buried. “It was buried under big rocks and we had to call a TLB machine to remove the rocks. They showed us the body parts in one of the houses. They admitted that they were waiting for the body parts to attract maggots. Apparently maggots collect money for them.” He said a community meeting had been called for today. “There had been a lot of rumours that foreign nationals were the ones killing people. None of those arrested is a foreign national. As community members we need to discuss how we are going to deal with this. We have also called izinyanga to the meeting. They need to distance themselves from this,” he said.
Majola said the meeting will be held at Esigodlweni community hall. Three suspects are expected to appear in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on Monday for being in possession of human remains.

A fake beggar, Abdullahi Abbas, who was apprehended in Ikorodu area of Lagos State yesterday, told a mob that he makes between N5,500 and N8,000 daily.

An Arsenal fan , Barrister Kissinger Ikeokwu , who also confirmed the death , disclosed that Gunners’ fans in the state mourn the painful exit .
Ikeokwu , who described the Dominic as a great fan of the London- based football club said the thoughts of all Arsenal fans in the state were with the family.
Our correspondent gathered that the deceased , who was in his early 40s , had supported Arsenal from his childhood.
“ He loved Arsenal passionately. He closed his shop to make sure that he watched his darling club play . He could even deny himself food if his team was beaten, ” another source said.
